New York Wind Power Coalition Seeks Input on Offshore Proposal

The Long-Island New York City Offshore Wind Collaborative (the “Collaborative”) is seeking to bring renewable wind power to New York coastal waters.  The Collaborative is formally seeking information from the wind power industry and interested parties in support of its efforts to promote a potential 700-megawatt wind installation in coastal waters off New York State.    The group, whose members include Con Edison (ConEd), the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), recently issued a Request for Information (RFI) to solicit information from potential developers, the community, and other interested parties, to assist the Collaborative in its planning process.

Next steps would include issuance of a request for proposals by the Collaborative, evaluation and selection of bidders, a power purchase agreement, and ultimately the construction and operation of the facility, which pursuant to a preliminary schedule would be operational in 2015.  One proposed location of such a facility is approximately 13 miles off of Rockaway Peninsula, although according to the RFI, the Collaborative is open to other possible locations.  The RFI follows a study issued in March, 2009 which found the project to be feasible within the context of New York’s power grid.

Responses to the RFI are due by August 31, 2009.   More information is available at the Collaborative’s website.
